truth-gathering and sharing the knowledge of what occurred at canada’s residential schools is at the heart of building reconciliation.

this year, in an effort to create opportunities to learn, connect and share truth in the ottawa region, màmawi together will be hosting a multi-faceted event series aimed at bringing communities together during truth and reconciliation week.

We invite you to join us september 29 and 30 to hear the testimonies of survivors from ottawa, quebec, and northern canada, take part in cultural and traditional values, and honour those impacted by the residential school system and those who did not come home.

10:00–10:30 Opening Remarks by Tim O’Loan,  President, Màmawi Together
Welcome by Elder Claudette Commanda

10:30–11:30    Kigi-abinòjìnjishag (Together with the Children) Walking the Journey of Reconciliation Presented by Elder Claudette Commanda
Claudette Commanda will share her personal understanding of what reconciliation is; and, the role of education to make reconciliation a success, and the reconciliation is important for all children. She will also speak about how she includes children in her work in promoting healing and relationship building.

11:30–12:30 The Intergenerational Impact of Residential and Day Schools
Presented by Kyrstin Dumont

12:30–1:15 Lunch (on own)

1:15–2:15 Intergenerational Trauma and the Rise of the Healers
The impacts of Indian Residential Schools and Indian Day Schools brought about an intentional break in Indigenous Culture and Way of Life. It created a need for Bridges, people who could walk between two Worlds and bring them together. A new generation of healers began to arise amidst this and serve those in need.

Hear from Residential and Day School Survivors on their childhood experience and impact of attending school.

National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2022

Commemorating the second Annual Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, join us on Parliament Hill for a full day honouring the Survivors of Canada’s residential schools and remembering the children who did not return home.

A 1-hour national commemorative gathering will be broadcast live from Ottawa’s LeBreton Flats on September 30, 2022. (Check your local listings.)

2:15–4:00 PM Statement Gathering and Healing Circles

Call For Volunteers

We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with each day of event programming. Volunteers will aid in managing registrations, facilitating the Spirit Walk, and supporting staff with various onsite event duties. If you’d like to volunteer for one day or both, get in touch!
